The castle of Old Place of Mochrum was built originally in 1385 and home to the Dunbar family. It was restored in the last century by the Bute family.
Mochrum Estate is renowned for its world famous herd of Belted Galloway cattle which are distinctive with their wonderful white belts round their middle. In addition, the estate is now being actively developed for commercial shooting and fishing. Following the unfortunate death of Flora Stuart in 2004, the estate was left to David Bertie, one of the fifth Marquess of Bute’s great grandsons.
